I'm going to let you in on a little secret. I diffuse essential oils pretty much every day. It's one of the first things I do when I'm getting ready to start working. I add a few drops of essential oils to the diffuser I keep in my office.

What are essential oils?
Essential oils are exactly that—they are natural oils derived from fruits, leaves, flowers, seeds, and even bark. They are extracted from plants through cold pressing or steam distillation and contain the scent and characteristics of the plant.
For thousands of years, pure essential oils have been used for therapeutic and cosmetic purposes. They offer a plant-based alternative to the chemicals in many of the products we use every day.
How to Use Essential Oils
Diffusing is one of my favorite ways to use essential oils. They are a natural replacement for artificially scented candles and air fresheners, and provide aromatherapy benefits—and make your home smell like a spa! You can even use essential oils to create your own DIY cosmetic and cleaning products.
Look for organic, non-GMO, 100% pure essential oils to be sure you are getting high-quality essential oils. Not all essential oils are “extracted” equally. Also, be sure to read the label to be sure nothing else is added to them. The ingredient list should be just the oil with no added fragrance or chemicals.
Citrus Essential Oil Blend
The oils I diffuse depend on the season and how I'm feeling. In the fall, and during the holidays, I love spicy blends with cinnamon, cloves, and citrus. But for spring, I love this all citrus combination with bergamot, orange, and lemon. It's clean and fresh, with a little hint of the exotic from the bergamot.
Bergamot is a citrus fruit that's typically grown in Italy. The oil has a scent that is both citrusy and floral. In fact, it's been used in making perfume for centuries.
And if you've ever had Earl Grey tea, bergamot is what adds that distinctive flavor. Earl Grey is traditionally made with black tea and oil of bergamot.
This essential oil diffuser recipe couldn't be simpler. Just add a few drops of each oil to your diffuser and turn it on. I like a ratio of 50% bergamot, 25% orange, and 25% lemon. While the total number of drops will depend on what's recommended for your diffuser. I use 4 drops of bergamot essential oil, 2 drops of orange essential oil, and 2 drops of lemon essential oil.
As with any DIY essential oil blend you can adjust this to your liking to find the ratio you love best.

Just a word of warning if you own cats. Their livers can't process citrus oils the way ours can, so please do not diffuse these oils around your cat!

Thanks Valerie! I don't have cats, but this is a great reminder for anyone who does to make sure whatever oils they use are safe around their pets.
