For those that aren’t familiar with this popular gluten-free ingredient, almond flour and almond meal are common in paleo and low carb baked goods recipes that are traditionally made with wheat flour. Both almond flour and almond meal can easily be found either online or in the baking or gluten-free sections in most grocery stores.
The primary difference between almond flour and almond meal is the way it’s made. Almond flour is typically made from blanched almonds that have had the skins removed and it is ground quite finely. This makes it perfect for baked goods needing a light, airy texture.
Almond meal is, of course, also made with almonds, but is typically more coarse and the almonds are often ground with the skin on. This is a good choice whenever you’re making a recipe that’s a little more forgiving with the texture, such as ‘breaded’ meat or quick breads.

Substitutes for Almond Flour
While almond flour is a popular paleo and keto-friendly ingredient, some people can't have almond flour recipes due to nut allergies. Here are a few alternative flours to consider if you find yourself in a similar situation:
- Sunflower Seed Flour is an excellent nut-free substitute that’s high in protein and fiber and low in net carbs. It's probably the closest almond flour substitute in recipes.
- Coconut Flour is a great choice for paleo and keto recipes, but keep in mind it is very different from almond flour and cannot be substituted cup for cup in recipes.
- Flax Meal is similar in texture to almond meal. It’s a little grittier and works well in recipes for crackers and bread, usually combined with another flour.
- Cassava Flour is made from ground yuca. It’s higher in carbs than the other almond flour substitutes, but it’s still paleo-friendly.
While these are all wonderful paleo pantry staples, these flours and meals all have different cooking properties.
