I used to love eggnog. It's creamy, sweet, and full of holiday spices. Unfortunately, most packaged eggnogs (including the non-dairy versions) are also full of refined sugar, gums, coloring, or other processed food ingredients.
Even homemade eggnog recipes are mostly dairy and sugar with a few eggs mixed in. It's basically melted vanilla ice cream with cinnamon and nutmeg. I created this eggnog shake to get my favorite holiday eggnog fix, without all the not-so-healthy ingredients.

Healthy eggnog protein shake
This easy paleo eggnog smoothie is perfect for breakfast or a quick snack. Using egg white powder for the eggs gives it extra protein. And using powdered egg whites gives it that classic holiday eggnog flavor without having to cook eggs for the eggnog. Look for an egg white protein powder like this one that's just dried egg whites, unsweetened, with no added ingredients.
And of course, this eggnog smoothie is dairy-free. I use cashew milk because its mild, creamy flavor blends perfectly with the eggnog spices. Homemade cashew milk is super easy to make. Unlike almond milk, you don't have to strain cashew milk through a nut milk bag—using a high-speed blender will make it perfectly smooth without straining. (See the full cashew milk recipe here).
Pro tip: save time by making smoothies when you make nut milk. Since the blender is already out, why not make a couple of smoothies at the same time? That way you only have to wash the blender once! 🙂
This healthy eggnog smoothie recipe tastes like an eggnog milkshake. You can even top it with coconut whipped cream and a sprinkle of fresh ground nutmeg to make it extra festive. And who doesn't want that for breakfast?

This sounds really good, but I am allergic to eggs. Do you have any substitution suggestions for the egg protein?
Lisa
Hi Linda, you can try substituting gelatin protein for the egg protein.
Carolyn
Even though it's January, I can't wait to try this! Thanks Lisa.
Lisa
You're welcome, Carolyn. Hope you love it!

It's my new favorite shake.....it really hit the spot. I actually used whey as I do not have egg white powder. It was delicious.
Lisa
Thanks Tracy Lynn! Glad you love it - it's one of my favorites!
Pat
Thanks for your post! I was wondering about whey as a substitution myself!
How much whey powder did you use?
Tara
Hi Lisa, have you tried this with liquid egg whites, rather than powder? Would that work? Thanks! --Tara
Lisa
Hi Tara, I have not tried this with liquid egg whites. I think it would probably change the texture a bit. If you try it, let me know how it turns out!
